There is a storm coming… a storm in the form of Alzheimer’s and dementia. And it will affect the whole world.
The Alzheimer’s Disease International has recently published a report about the global impact that different types of dementia (including Alzheimer’s) are going to have in the world in the next 40 years. It is expected that the number of people suffering dementias will be counted by millions, with a rate that will double every 20 years.
One of the main reasons for that, the report says, is the ageing of population. Another reason are the bad habits that we have and maintain along our whole life.
A complete solution to the number of increased cases of Alzheimer’s still does not exist. Proposals indicate that the solution should be enacted from different actors (doctors, governs, caregivers and people). Those solutions should include better diagnosing systems, better caregiver support and better residential options.
However, from your side, the best step you can take is prevention. Prevention is your strongest weapon. You are now in time to reduce your chances of suffering dementia by taking preventive steps.
Taking preventive steps is not going to erase completely your chances of suffering Alzheimer’s, but it will considerably decease them. Furthermore, by taking those steps you will be able to live a better life.
You must understand that you can live your life in perfect conditions even at old ages, just by doing this: preventing decay. And prevention means changing any bad habit you may have. For the rest of your life.
How can I prevent Alzheimer’s or dementia?
There are four habits you need to care in order to prevent dementias:
- Eating properly. What you eat heavily affects your brain. As a rule of thumb, those things that are good for your body, are good for your brain. And viceversa. You already know what is good and what is not for your brain/body. In case you don’t, you can read this post about how to properly feed your brain, or this one about which foods are damaging your brain. Specially, you should avoid all foods that make you obese, produce high tension, or generate diabetes. Very bad foods include sugar, salt, smoking and alcohol.
- Exercising. Underactivity has been found a common situation in people with Alzheimer’s. You need to exercise! Almost 5 days a week, 30 minutes each day. Exercise increases blood flowing to the brain, hence neurons receive the nutrients they need, and remove the waste generated by them. Don’t know how to start? Just read this post about how to plan your exercise routine. And start now!
- Reducing your stress. Stress produces cortisol that has been found as may produce dementias if not removed from the brain. You need cortisol to properly function under puntual situations of stress. But stress situations must be resolved and forgotten, allowing cortisol to be removed . If you do not resolve stress, you are not allowing cortisol to be removed, and are damaging your brain towards dementias. You can read about how to start removing stress in the post Stress reduction for dummies.
- Training your brain. Your brain needs challenges to keep working properly. In the same sense you exercise your body, you must exercise your brain. Otherwise, your neurons die because of inactivity. Training your brain allows you to build a cognitive reserve, that is, a bigger network of neurons that can support your brain in case other neurons die.
